Incorporated in 1980, Poway is a well-known bedroom community with commercial centers located all along Poway Road. The Poway Business Park is a large commercial area in the south part of town, centered on Scripps Poway Parkway. Alive with restaurants, retail outlets and businesses, Poway continues to grow in population and to prosper economically. Area students are proud to be a part of Poway School District ? the third largest school district in the county ? and continually achieve test scores that rank among the highest in the state.
Recreational opportunities are numerous and the city hosts many special activities and seasonal celebrations for family and community bonding. Many of these activities are made possible by the presence of Lake Poway. The lake is located just four miles east of Interstate 15 in the coastal foothills of Poway. Surrounded by eucalyptus groves and chaparral, Lake Poway offers more than 3,000 acres for fishing, boating, sailing, hiking, camping, picnicking, volleyball, and softball. For outdoor enthusiasts, hiking trails and nature programs abound just north of Lake Poway at the Blue Sky Reserve. The Lake Poway Open Trout Derby provides two exciting days of trophy fishing, while kids enjoy summer hiking, boating and fishing at Lake Poway Summer Camp.
Another popular recreational destination is 4.75-acre Old Poway Park, which houses two restored historic buildings. The park includes the Heritage Museum, the Poway-Midland Railroad operating steam train, a blacksmith shop and picnic facilities. The park offers group tours and hosts many special events. The Earth/Arbor Day Celebration is held annually at Old Poway Park. This festival showcases environmental organizations, crafts and animal presentations and also features live entertainment. Other activities include a weekly Farmers' Market, a traditional crafts market and in the summer, a "Concerts in the Park" series. Another annual summer highlight is the Old Fashioned Fourth of July, a "turn-of-the-century" style festival with musicians, actors, arts and crafts displays, gunfight demonstrations, pony rides and a patriotic costume contest.
The Poway Community Park features the Community Swim Center, Weingart Senior Center, Community Center, and athletic facilities including tennis and basketball courts, two playground areas, bocce ball courts, a dog park and a fitness area. The Poway Community Swim Center complex houses a 50-meter Olympic-sized pool, a children's wading pool and a diving well. The Weingart Senior Center offers many programs and events for seniors, while Poway Community Center features an auditorium with a stage and kitchen.
